Turmeric for Hair - Hair loss, Hair Dye, Dandruff

Turmeric for Hair

The orange powder of the turmeric rhizome (Curcuma longa) is a spice with many virtues which constitutes a natural remedy to treat digestive disorders, ulcerative colitis, arthritis, atherosclerosis and certain cancers.

This plant, a cousin of ginger, is also coveted for beauty treatments because its’ cosmetic properties help fight the signs of aging, reduce facial hair, skin whitening and fade stretch marks.

Did you know that turmeric can also be used in hair care to beautify the hair, make it grow faster and treat certain conditions of the scalp? I invite you to discover recipes using turmeric to care for your hair. We will consider four benefits of turmeric for hair health.

1. Turmeric and Dandruff Treatment

Dandruff is a manifestation of a disorder of the formation of the epidermis. The cells of the scalp are renewed too quickly and the oil present on the scalp forms a cluster of cells that have not had time to dry out gradually. This scalp condition is often accompanied by an unpleasant itching.

Capillary Properties :

Turmeric has antibacterial properties, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. This spice naturally cleanses the scalp and reduces dandruff by stimulating blood circulation in the scalp.

Turmeric Recipe against dandruff :

The problem of dandruff can be treated by applying a mixture of turmeric and olive oil on the scalp before taking a shower. Leave the hair care for 15 minutes, then rinse the hair with a natural shampoo.

2. Turmeric against Hair Loss

Hair loss can be caused by poor diet, stress, hormonal disorder, heredity or disease.

Another possible reason for alopecia : TGF Beta 1 (Transforming Growth Factor beta 1) is a growth factor that appears to play a role in the death of hair follicles and the hair loss.

Capillary Properties :

According to a Korean study (BioSpectrum Life Science Institute), curcumin, an active ingredient contained in turmeric, is capable of inhibiting the activity of TGF beta 1 and thus preventing hair loss.

Turmeric Recipe against Hair Loss :

Mix turmeric powder with milk and honey and apply this natural hair treatment on your scalp by a gentle massage.

3. Natural Hair Coloring

The orange-yellow color of turmeric is used to dye textiles and clothing. But it can also be used as a natural dye for hair. Turmeric powder can be combined with an infusion prepared with other spices and yellow flowers as saffron, chamomile or calendula or even with henna.

Properties of Turmeric :

Turmeric brings a sharp tint to blond or brown hair and a bright yellow tint to the light or white hair. In addition, the hair mask with turmeric makes the hair flexible and shiny.

Natural Hair Coloring Recipe :

Prepare an infusion with yellow ingredients of your choice (those mentioned above) then dissolve the turmeric powder by adding a little salt.

The recommended proportion is 25 % of powder to 75 % of water. Once the home hair dye has cooled, apply the color to the roots and throughout the hair using rubber gloves.

4. Scalp Treatment

Turmeric can be used in the treatment of various scalp conditions such as dermatitis and eczema that cause itching, hair thinning and inflammation of the scalp. Fungal infections can also cause hair loss.

Capillary Properties of Turmeric :

Curcumin, an active ingredient contained in the rhizome of turmeric has anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, antioxidant, antiseptic and antibacterial properties that helps treat many conditions of the scalp.

A homemade cosmetic preparation containing turmeric soothes an irritated scalp.
