Properties of lemon in cosmetics

The lemon (Citrus limonum) which produce the citrus that we use in our beauty mask recipes, is one of 16 different species in the genus Citrus of the family Rosacea. What are the cosmetic properties of lemon juice ? What are its virtues in beauty treatments ?

Lemon juice is a natural astringent agent with emollient, scrubbing, toning, firmening (on the connective tissue), refreshing, anti-wrinkle, anti-stain, antiseptic and antibacterial properties.

The alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), such as citric acid contained in the molecules of the lemon exfoliate skin, taking off the dead cells of the horny layer in a gentle peeling manner. This results in an improvement in skin texture. They also improve the skin’s hydration. The cosmetics industry often incorporates these natural acids in wrinkle creams and anti-aging to smooth facial features.

By virtue of its purifying power, lemon juice is actually a perfect home remedy to correct skin imperfections. Lemon juice helps to refresh and tone the skin. Some even say that lemon essential oil has rejuvenating properties. During prolonged exposure to polluted city air, applying a lemon juice mask to the face purifies the skin and helps restore a beautiful complexion.

Lemon juice has the virtue of clarifying and whitening skin. It thus unifies the complexion. It would have the power to blur or erase some visible marks or scars on the skin.

Lemon juice is a great remedy for the care of oily skin and acne. In the case of oily skin having a high pH (alkaline), lemon juice helps to lower the pH of the skin to its normal value (between 5.5 and 6.5). It also tightens dilated pores and helps erase comedones or blackheads (as a descaling agent).

Lemon juice is used in hair care to brighten the hair and makes it shine.
