Hyperpigmentation of the Inner Thighs _ Four Possible Causes

We will list four possible causes of hyperpigmentation of the inner thighs:

1) Regular friction on the inner thighs

Regularly rubbing a leg over the other or a tissue on the inner thighs can cause some skin irritation which in the long term, appears as hyperpigmentation of the skin. This is often true in women who are overweight or those who like to wear clothes and tight underwear.

To prevent skin on the thighs and genital area from further darkening or browning, avoid wearing tight or too fitted clothes, which cause sweating and generate too much moisture on the skin. If you are overweight, try to lose a few pounds. Choose light, flexible and preferably cotton underwear.

2) Hormonal phenomena and hormonal contraceptive pills

Hormonal imbalance may also be one of the causes of hyperpigmentation of skin in certain areas of the body. In the United States, oral contraceptives (birth control pills) has often been implicated in the appearance of some dark or brown spots between the legs and other body parts.

3) Pregnancy and brown spots

During pregnancy, many women notice dark spots on the breasts, nipples or thighs between the legs. These dark areas occur because of an increase in melanin in the body. This is the same natural substance that gives color to skin and hair. More than 90 percent of pregnant women complain of these dark patches.

4) Acanthosis nigricans

Acanthosis nigricans is a skin disorder that involves the appearance of thick symmetrical stains or patches, rough (hyperkeratosis), tanned (hyperpigmentation) often in the folds (groin, armpits, of the lips, neck, eyelids, perinea, the folds under the breasts, vulva, etc..)

Since these spots have a dirty appearance, observers may mistakenly believe that it is a health problem! Heredity, obesity, diabetes, certain medications and some cancers are all factors that may be involved in the occurrence of this rare dermatosis.

Darker Skin in the Inner Region (genital)

« When I watch myself in the mirror, I notice that my vagina is darker than the general color of my skin. I was told that this is due to the soap I use. But I always use a neutral soap. I am white and this intimate part is dark. What can I do to lighten it? » _ F.G

Should a woman feel embarrassed to have genitals darker than the rest of the body color?

You should know that this is NORMAL. At puberty, under the influence of sex hormones, genitals undergo a lot of changes. At the vulva, the young girl’s labia become pigmented and become darker. The labia, for their part, varies in color from pink to gray or deep black, depending on the women. Heredity does account for something !
