Carnitine Effects on Weight Loss

Each month, more than five thousands of internauts look for information on « weight loss l carnitine ».

Being overweight is actually a medical concern because it can seriously affect a person’s health. You probably realize that excess fat is unhealthy and you are looking to lose weight.

You have obviously heard of carnitine and you would like to know if L-carnitine could help you burn fats. So, what is L-carnitine ?

Does it really burn fats?

What is the difference between subcutaneous fat(SAT) and visceral fat (VAT) ? Which one is bad ?

Adipose Tissue Cells

Adipose tissue is made up of cells specialized to contain and synthesize globules of fat. There are actually two categories of adipose tissue cells: white and brown fat cells.

White fat is the most common type of adipose cell which serve three important functions: source of energy, heat insulation and mechanical cushion. Its cells contain a single large fat droplet.

Brown fat cell has an extensive amount of cytoplasm with miniature power stations (mitochondria) and contain numerous lipid droplets of varying size. This type of cell found mostly in newborn babies, generates heat to regulate body temperature.

In humans, white adipose tissue cells compose as much as 20% of the body weight in men and 25% of the body weight in women.

Subcutaneous vs. Visceral Fat (Good fat vs. bad fat)

As its name suggests, subcutaneous fat is located just underneath the skin. This type of fat provides insulation from cold and heat.

Visceral fat, on the other hand, is found in the abdomen (sometimes called intra-abdominal fat) and around internal organs.

Various studies have revealed that subcutaneous fat is less dangerous than visceral fat. Subcutaneous fat may actually protect people from metabolic diseases such as diabetes.

What about visceral fat ? Visceral fat is metabolized by the liver, which turns it into cholesterol promoting later bad cholesterol (LDL) levels. According to researchers from Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions in Baltimore, visceral fat increases the risk for heart attack. Visceral fat increases appetite and contributes to high blood pressure, high insulin, high cholesterol and high triglycerides.

L-carnitine General Information

L-carnitine is a derivative of the amino acids lysine and methionine. It is a vitamin-like compound sometimes called vitamin Bt, naturally synthesized in the liver and kidneys and stored in the heart, brain and muscles. Vitamins B3 (niacin), B6 (pyridoxine), and iron are also needed for the synthesis of carnitine in the human body.

What Foods Contain L-Carnitine ? L-carnitine is found naturally in red meat (100 g of beef contains about 145 mg of l carnitine), dairy products, avocado and tempeh (fermented soybean product).

A deficiency of L-carnitine can cause health problems, such as muscle fatigue, cramps, low blood-sugar levels, heart disease and weight problems.

Carnitine Effects on Weight Loss

Fat is a primary source of energy in muscle. What has carnitine to do with fats ?

Inside the muscle cells, L-carnitine is responsible for transporting fatty acids (fats) into the mitochondria. Mitochondrion is like a utility company which converts organic food molecules into chemical energy (ATP). So, L-carnitine allows cells to burn fats as fuel.

Carnitine Effects on White Adipose Tissue

L-carnitine is a health supplement used to boost and improve weight loss and energy. Many people take L-carnitine as a dietary supplement in order to help them become slimmer.

Studies on mice and clinic studies on human have revealed that l-carnitine supplementation combined with aerobic training can decrease the weight of white adipose tissue accelerating natural weight loss.

It also helps remove fats waste products (ketones) from the blood stream. Furthermore, L-Carnitine helps to stabilize blood sugar.

Dietary supplementation of 1 gram daily may increase the change of fat in energy production by 70% !

L-Carnitine supplementation works best with a diet low in sugars and with high intake of Omega 3 fats.
